Asian Handicap
Ordinarily, when you place a bet on soccer results, you’d choose between win, lose or draw. When it comes to full time results, Asian handicaps remove the possibility of a draw. You have two betting options, home or away. We then assign a weighted “handicap” that gives the underdog an advantage and the favourite a handicap.
There are different types of Asian handicap bets ranging from quarter goal to whole goal. These give you an idea of the team advantage over one another but also tell you how your bet is being placed. The result and handicap bet could mean winning your bet entirely, getting your entire stake refunded (Push), winning half and getting half your stake refunded (Half Win), losing half of your stake and the other half refunded (Half Lose) or losing.
Where Asian Handicap bets are placed In-Play, goals that have been awarded prior to bet placement are discounted for settlement purposes. The scoreline is treated as 0-0 at the time of bet placement. The odds of your selection and the choice of lines available will reflect this.
The Asian Handicap will appear on site like this:
Below are some examples of each type of Asian Handicap along with the scenarios of what would have happened with your bet depending on the different possible outcomes.
Asian Handicap 0.5/1.0
If you see this displayed, the game starts with the score of 0.75 (3/4 goal handicap). The underdog team has the advantage of a three-quarter goal.
Example - Newcastle United +0.5/+1 Vs Arsenal FC -0.5/-1
You bet on Newcastle United to win with +0.5/+1 Handicap.
- If Newcastle United win, you win the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you win the bet due to the 0.75 goal advantage
- If Arsenal FC win the game by one goal, you lose half of your stake and the other half is returned (Half Lose)
- If Arsenal FC win the game by two or more goals the bet is a losing bet
- If Arsenal FC lose, you lose the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you lose the bet due to the 0.75 handicap
- If Arsenal FC win the game by one goal, you get half of your stake returned and the other half paid out at the stated odds (Half Win)
- If Arsenal FC win the game by two or more goals you win the bet
Asian Handicap -1
In this case, the favourite starts with a single goal handicap. Due to it being a ‘whole’ goal disadvantage there is a possibility of having your whole stake refunded (see example below):
Example - Real Madrid -1 Vs Atletico Madrid +1
You bet on Real Madrid to win with -1 Handicap.
- If Real Madrid wins by two or more goals, you win the bet (as the -1 handicap has been covered)
- If Real Madrid wins the game by one goal, your stake is returned
- If the game is a draw, you lose the bet
- If Atletico Madrid wins, you lose the bet
- If Atletico Madrid wins, you win the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you win the bet due to the one goal advantage
- If Atletico Madrid loses by a single goal, you get your stake back (this negates the one goal advantage that was assigned)
- If Real Madrid wins by two goals or more, you lose the bet (they have covered the one goal advantage)
Asian Handicap 0/0.5
With this Handicap Value, the underdog team has a quarter goal advantage:
Example - Manchester United 0/+0.5 Vs Chelsea FC 0/-0.5
You bet on Manchester United to win with 0/+0.5 Handicap.
- If Chelsea FC wins the game, you lose the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, your 0.25 advantage means you get half of your stake returned and the other half paid out at the stated odds (Half Win)
- If Manchester United wins, you win the bet
- If Chelsea FC wins, you win the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you -0.25 disadvantage means you lose half of your stake and the other half is returned to you (Half Lose)
- If Manchester United wins, you lose the bet
Asian Handicap 0.5
With this Handicap Value the underdog starts with a half goal advantage. Betting on this value removes the possibility of stakes (or part of stakes) being returned:
Example - Chelsea +0.5 Vs Liverpool -0.5
You bet on Chelsea to win with 0.5 Handicap.
- If Chelsea wins, you win the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you win the bet due to the 0.5 advantage
- If Liverpool win, you lose the bet
- If Liverpool win, you win the bet
- If the match ends in a draw, you lose the bet due to the -0.5 handicap
- If Chelsea Wins, you lose the bet
Additional Information on Asian Handicap
Occasionally the match will be competitive enough to have a ‘0’ value handicap. That is effectively the same market as ‘Draw no Bet’ where picking either team to win will result in your bet winning if the result going your way. In the event of a draw your entire stake will be refunded.
You may also see ‘bigger’ values assigned in some matches such as 1.75, 2.25 etc. These are still quarter and three quarter values and the favourite/underdog have been simply assigned a bigger handicap/advantage. The principle of how these outcomes work is the same as the one’s given in the above examples.
